Since its establishment, the main mission of BPKLCOS is Education, Service & Research. The goal of this centre is to improve the eye health status of people of Nepal by providing comprehensive eye care through training of competent, compassionate, caring and socially responsible ophthalmic workforce sensitive to the needs of both individuals as well as of large population groups by collaborating with all stakeholders. The postgraduation education in ophthalmology at the centre aims to produce specialized medical professionals for nations and till date, Tribhuvan University’s department of ophthalmology and BPKLCOS are a proud alma mater of157 Ophthalmologists, more than 100 optometrists, several thousand of medical and nursing graduates. This centre has trained students from 7 countries and our alumni are working in more than 15 developing and developed countries. Our faculty members and undergraduate and postgraduate students are actively involved in clinical research and have publications in more than 100 articles in the international and national peer review journals. Multiple projects under the grant of NHRC, UGC, RECON, WHO and STAC have been conducted at BPKLCOS.
B. P. Koirala Lions Centre for Ophthalmic Studies (BPKLCOS) has a long history in ophthalmic field. It has established itself as a leader in eye care development in promoting not only ophthalmic services, but also conducting major research work and producing highly qualified ophthalmologists and optometrists, who are now leading major eye hospitals and institutions all over Nepal. Institute of Medicine was established in 1972 AD and MD Ophthalmology Program was started in 1987AD as a small wing within TU Teaching Hospital. In 1996 AD BPKLCOS was established as an Autonomous wing under the umbrella of Institute of Medicine, located adjacent to Emergency department within the premises of TU Teaching Hospital. Bachelor of Optometry program was established in the year 1998AD.
