Lumbini, a name that evokes serenity and spiritual awakening, is a cornerstone of Buddhist faith.  It is the hallowed birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. Recognizing the profound significance of this sacred site, the Government of Nepal established the Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) in 1985.
The LDT's creation arose from the Lumbini Development Trust Act of 1985. This act entrusted the organization with the crucial task of implementing a comprehensive master plan.  This ambitious plan, finalized in 1978, envisioned the transformation of Lumbini into a sprawling sanctuary encompassing over 7.7 square kilometers (3 square miles). The sacred garden, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Buddha, would be the heart of this meticulously designed space.

The LDT's primary mission extends far beyond the restoration and development of the Lumbini Garden. Its mandate encompasses a wider region known as the Greater Lumbini Area. This area encompasses not only Lumbini itself but also other locations directly or indirectly linked to the life of Lord Buddha. These significant sites include:

Tilaurakot (ancient Kapilvastu): Believed to be the location of Buddha's palace.

Gotihawa, Niglihawa, Sagarhawa, Sisaniya Kot, Araurakot, Kudan (Kapilvastu): All associated with Buddha's life experiences.

Devdaha (Rupandehi): Where Buddha is said to have spent his childhood.

Ramagram and Panditpur (Nawalparasi): Additional locations with ties to Buddha's life journey.

The LDT actively promotes these historic sites, fostering a deeper understanding of Buddha's life and teachings. Additionally, the Trust's purview extends to areas designated by the Government of Nepal and published in the Nepal Gazette, ensuring the preservation of all relevant locations.

The LDT's activities go beyond restoration; they encompass the development of infrastructure to serve pilgrims and visitors. The creation of a new Lumbini Village provides comfortable accommodation, while the dedicated Cultural Centre/Monastic Zone offers enriching cultural experiences and a haven for monastic communities.
The LDT plays a pivotal role in maintaining Lumbini's prestigious status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through meticulous efforts, the Trust ensures the site's integrity and authenticity by preserving archaeological remains and safeguarding its cultural significance. The LDT operates under the guidance of a 16-member council chaired by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. This council provides strategic direction and oversees the Trust's activities. Additionally, a 9-member executive committee, also headed by the Culture Minister, ensures the smooth day-to-day operations of the LDT.

To fulfill its ambitious mandate, the LDT has established a comprehensive staff structure. The trust employs dedicated professionals across various divisions:
Administration and Management Division: This division manages the LDT's internal operations, ensuring efficient resource allocation and personnel management.
Engineering and Botanical Division: This division plays a vital role in the physical development of Lumbini. It oversees the construction of infrastructure projects, landscaping initiatives, and the meticulous preservation of the Lumbini Garden.
Accounts and Procurement Division: This division handles the LDT's financial resources, ensuring transparency and responsible budgeting practices. Additionally, it manages the procurement of necessary materials and services for the Trust's various projects.
Archaeology Division:  This specialized division spearheads archaeological exploration, excavation, and conservation efforts.  Through meticulous research and preservation techniques, the LDT strives to unravel the rich history of the Lumbini area and safeguard its archaeological treasures.
Beyond these core divisions, the LDT has established various sections dedicated to specific development, archaeological, and promotional activities. These specialized sections enable the Trust to address the multifaceted needs of Lumbini's transformation.
