The livestock sector, which contributes about 27 percent to the total agricultural GDP and 13 percent to the gross domestic product, has multifaceted importance in Nepali society. Animal health, animal breeding, animal feed and market management are important sectoral sectors for the development of the livestock sector. Animal feed management, which accounts for about 70 percent of the cost of animal husbandry, is currently the main challenge of animal husbandry in Nepal. It is essential to ensure the availability of quality animal feed to increase animal and animal-related production and productivity by developing commercial and modern animal husbandry. Currently, there is a 33 percent shortage of dry matter and 50 percent shortage of TDN in Nepal. About 37 percent of the grazing areas and pastures, which are the main basis of animal husbandry in the high hilly and mountainous regions, are currently at high risk due to lack of access for animals and high stocking density. Although the national demand for animal feed has not been met as expected, the animal feed sector is currently developing as an industry with the participation of the private sector. Currently, a total of 118 small and medium-sized animal feed industries are operating in the country with private sector investment, from which an average of 2600 tons of animal feed is being produced daily. With the development of the commercial feed industry, about 80 percent of the raw materials required for feed production, such as corn and soybeans, and 100 percent of feed additives and supplements, are currently imported from abroad. Therefore, in order to make the animal husbandry business sustainable and competitive and achieve the highest returns from it, the need for a self-sufficient animal feed system has been felt to ensure the availability of balanced and quality animal feed, and to reduce the trade deficit created by the import of large quantities of ready-made feeds, raw materials for feeds, and feed supplements with the increasing commercialization of the animal husbandry sector. In addition, to develop and expand the grass-based animal husbandry system to produce animal products at low cost, to increase the productivity of animal products and make the nation self-reliant in animal products, to emphasize import substitution and export promotion, to develop animal husbandry as a profitable and dignified profession and attract youth towards commercial animal husbandry, to develop grass farming as the main profession by researching and expanding the latest technologies in animal feed management, to develop grass farming as a main profession, to develop a grass supply chain in line with the growing demand for grass seed and plants, to adopt scientific methods in the conservation, promotion and consumption of pasture and grazing areas, etc. The National Animal Feed and Livestock Quality Management Laboratory has been established under the Department of Animal Services in the federal structure from 2075 Sawal Shravan 1.
