The school of nursing was first established in Kathmandu in 1956 under the directive of the health service, ministry of health. The first batch of this school had enrolled only 15 students. The expected proficiency of the produced manpower was illness oriented. Principally this was a Hospital oriented curriculum that was in effect between 1956 to 1986. This curriculum aimed at preparing nurses to be efficient in fulfilling the health needs of the people of Nepal. With the introduction of the new educational system in 1972, nursing education was brought under the Institute of medicine, Tribhuvan University. After that, a major revised curriculum that was based on primary health care was introduced in 1987 which was again updated in 2006. The aim of this programme was to prepare competent and self-reliant nurses who would be able to care for the individual, family and community.
Nepalgunj Nursing campus is the only one constituent nursing campus of Tribhuvan University; Institute of medicine in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim province. The campus is located in Nepalgunj sub-metropolitan city (SMPC); ward no - 10, in close proximity with Bheri Hospital.
The Ministry of Health established ANM training school in 1969 in Nepalgunj. The school over a period of 17 years produced 406 ANMs. In 1987, it was upgraded to Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL) nursing campus. Since then it has produced 1153 staff nurses. Currently 116 students are pursuing education at various levels.
Sighting the need for middle level manpower in nursing, in 2011, 2 years Bachelor in Nursing (BN) programme was started which from 2013 was revised to as 3 years Bachelor in Nursing Science (BNS). After phase out of PCL Nursing; 4years B.Sc. nursing was started in 2021.
