A significant milestone in the history of the Rotary movement was marked on April 13, 1959, when Nepal officially joined the global Rotary family. On this day, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu was chartered as the first Rotary club in Nepal, ushering in a new era of service and community development in the country.

Since its inception, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu has been dedicated to fulfilling Rotary International’s mission through impactful projects focusing on health, hunger, and humanity. The club’s legacy includes a wide range of pioneering initiatives, such as:

• Hosting mega eye camps and supporting tuberculosis, leprosy, and polio eradication efforts.
• Establishing Nepal’s first radiotherapy unit at Bhaktapur Hospital.
• Setting up the first cath labs at Bir Hospital and Shahid Gangalal Hospital.
• Establishing Eastern Hospital in Biratnagar and the first Maxillofacial Center at the National Dental Hospital.
• Donating medical supplies to national and regional health institutions.
• Providing ambulances to health centers and conducting regular health camps.
• Improving school infrastructure, offering scholarships, and training Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) for self-reliance.
• Constructing the children’s railway and park at Bhrikutimandap.
• Enhancing the water supply system and building multiple reservoirs for community use.

The Rotary Club of Kathmandu is widely recognized as the most active and vibrant Rotary club in Nepal. With a strong commitment to service, the club implements multiple impactful projects across the country and maintains robust international partnerships with Rotary clubs worldwide.

Each year, RC Kathmandu extends its reach to nearly 40 districts across Nepal, delivering programs that benefit thousands of individuals and communities. Its wide-ranging initiatives reflect the club’s dedication to sustainable development, humanitarian service, and global collaboration.Today, with the continued support of Rotary International, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu is actively engaged in Rotary’s seven areas of focus:

• Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
• Disease prevention and treatment
• Water, sanitation, and hygiene
• Maternal and child health
• Basic education and literacy
• Economic and community development
• Environmental protection

The club is currently spearheading several key initiatives,a including:

• Construction of girl-friendly toilets in public schools.
• Providing scholarships to over 1,000 primary school children annually.
• Delivering ICT training for teachers to enhance digital literacy.
• Refurbishing and constructing health centers with upgraded equipment and infrastructure.
• Promoting menstrual health management and mental health awareness.
• Through decades of dedicated service, the Rotary Club of Kathmandu continues to be a beacon of positive change, uplifting communities and inspiring future generations across Nepal.
