The initial years witnessed the establishment of an Army School in the vicinity of Chaunni Barracks in Katmandu in 1952 AD. A Cadet Training Wing was incorporated within the organizational structure of the School that would be solely responsible for the conduct of basic training to Officer Cadets. Over a span of three and a half decades, the Army School was reassigned to a number of locations and ended up in its current location of Kharipati. In time, it was felt that a separate organization with a distinct identity was necessary to serve as a center of excellence for the training of Officer Cadets alone. Hence, in order to meet this contextual challenge, the wing of the Army School located in Kharipati at the time, to evolved into the independent Royal Nepalese Military Academy on 26 December 1996.
The Academy underwent various changes, including being renamed as the Military Academy in 2006. Later, on March 14, 2009, it was rebranded as the Nepali Military Academy (NMA) under the Directorate General of Military Training and Doctrine (DGMT & D). The NMA's primary focus remains the production of Officers through rigorous military training combined with a Bachelor’s Degree course from the renowned Tribhuvan University.
