This place is located in the eastern part of Kailali district under the Sudurpaschim Province of Nepal, 14 km south of the Mahendra Highway, 14 km north of the Indian border, on the west bank of the Karnali River. After the restoration of democracy, it was one of the 15 municipalities declared at once on Magh 17, 2053 BS as a city-facing municipality, municipality. Currently, according to the decision of the Council of Ministers on Falgun 27, 2073 BS, the former Tikapur Municipality, Narayanpur and Dhansinghpur municipalities. The current Greater Tikapur Municipality has been established by merging them into one place.

It is said that this place was named Tikapur because during the settlement of this densely forested area, the settlements here were arranged in a circular shape like a Tika. According to another story, this place was named Tikapur because during the settlement, the work of clearing the forest began on the day of Tika of Dashain.
