The UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, established in 1998, has become a key programme and advocacy agency working across UNESCO’s fields of competence: education, sciences, culture, communication and information. Its mission focuses on building peace, alleviating poverty, and fostering sustainable development and intercultural dialogue.
In Nepal, UNESCO promotes quality education for all, with a specific focus on women’s empowerment, literacy, and lifelong learning. The Office supports the protection of the country's two cultural and two natural World Heritage sites, encourages cultural diversity, and promotes cultural and creative industries. Furthermore, it mobilizes scientific knowledge, advocates for press freedom and the safety of journalists, and provides critical support in advancing digital transformation across the country. Working closely with the UN Country Team and development partners, UNESCO implements its 2023–2027 Country Strategy under the theme Fostering Agency and Inclusion. This strategy is closely aligned with Nepal’s national priorities for inclusion, effective federalism, and greater participation in regional and international platforms, while remaining in full alignment with UNESCO’s broader regional strategy.
