Vidushi Yogamaya Himalayan Ayurveda University (YAU) is a national land-grant university founded by the Government of Nepal under the Yogamaya Ayurveda University Act 2079 v.s. focused on teaching and research on the sciences of Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, Himalayan medicine, and herbal medicine, as well as the production of Ayurvedic medicines. The YAU, headquartered in the Arun Valley of the Koshi region, is a higher education initiative to establish campuses, teaching hospitals, and medical production units in all seven provinces of Nepal. The university dedicates itself to the preservation and advancement of Nepal's traditions in Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, herbal medicine, and Himalayan healthcare practices. We aim to become a center of excellence in holistic wellness research and education.
The university is named in honor of Yogamaya Neupane, a revered socio-religious reformer and scholar who organized a movement against social and gender discrimination in the Arun Valley during Rana dynastic rule in the 1930s. Because of having not fulfilled her demands by the Rana regime, she and more than six dozen disciples drowned themselves in the Arun River in 1941.
About 425 Ropani of land has been acquired by the Government of Nepal for the University in Khandbari Municipality Ward No. 9 in Sankhuwasabha district, and in Shadananda Municipality Ward No. 6 in Bhojpur district. About 200 Ropanis of more land is in the process to be acquired for the University in the same area. Both sites are located in either sides of the Arun River.
