World Neighbors (WN) has been working in Nepal since 1973 and we currently have programs in the districts of Sindhupalchok, Sindhuli and Udaypur, covering 75 rural communities. The programs in Nepal focus on the development of savings and credit groups as entry points for broader community development processes. These groups are also used to build trust and strengthen social networks amongst World Neighbors and the community. After the successful creation of savings and credit groups, WN works to build the capacity of local organizations and marginalized populations. Our work in sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods in Nepal improves food security, nutrition, and the overall livelihoods of beneficiaries. Sustainable agriculture techniques are simple to use, cost-effective, replicable, and farmer/women friendly. The use of these techniques has increased production (mainly vegetables), reduced input costs, added to household incomes, and provided added value to locally grown crops by demonstrating their commercial potential. Sustainable agriculture emphasizes creating awareness about soil health and teaching farmers way to enhance the soil. Community-based natural resource management in Nepal focuses on building local capacity to use, improve and harness local resources while protecting and preserving the environment. One program component is agroforestry which provides commercial and conservation benefits while promoting environmental sustainability and economic viability. The community and reproductive health programs aim to promote awareness, knowledge and healthy practices in areas of general health, hygiene, nutrition, sanitation, respiratory disease and reproductive health.
