The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report of the 454 MW (2660.77 GWh per year without outage) capacity semi-reservoir (PROR) type Kimathanka Arun Hydropower Project on the Arun River, with physical infrastructure located in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality of Sankhuwasabha District, Koshi Province, proposed by Shree Vidyut Utpadan Company Limited, has been received by this ministry for approval through the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.

According to the report received, all the structures of the project (dam, reservoir, headrace tunnel, underground power house, tailrace tunnel, access road) will be constructed in Bhot Khola Rural Municipality Ward No. 2. The section of the Arun River where the water flow decreases will be approximately 8.6 km from the dam to the power house. Bhot Khola Rural Municipality Ward No. 2 will be limited to the section.

The 2,700-meter-long reservoir created by the 140-meter-high (from the foundation) dam, which will be constructed to use 143.5 cubic meters of water per second by blocking the river for 6 hours a day, will inundate an area of ​​about 0.35 square kilometers. Structures such as audit tunnels, headrace tunnels, surge shafts, and tailrace tunnels will be constructed at various locations from the dam to the power house. The highest level of the reservoir will be 2035masl above sea level. About 168.73 hectares of land, including about 68.09 hectares of private ownership and about 100.64 hectares of government ownership (about 72.74 hectares of forest area in the buffer zone of Makalu Barun National Park and about 27.9 hectares of forest area under the jurisdiction of Division Forest), will be required to construct the project structures. The construction period of the project will be 5 years and the total construction cost will be Rs. 93.80 billion.

As per Rule 9 (6) of the Environmental Protection Regulations, 2077, there is a provision for the public to submit comments on this report, so this report has been made public at the following locations and on the website of this Ministry (www.mofe.gov.np). If appropriate comments are received on the report, this Ministry will also take those comments into consideration while approving the implementation of the proposal.
