Vector Borne Disease Research and Training Center (VBDRTC) was established in the year 1979 AD as a Malaria Research and Training Centre under the Nepal Malaria Eradication Organization (NMEO). On 12th June 1996, the center was named Vector Borne Disease Research and Training Center. The key objective of Vector Borne Disease Research & Training Center is to fulfill the knowledge gap and supplement with evidence base in the better understanding of VBDs etiology, its transmission intensity and interventions programs implemented in Nepal.

The Vector Borne Disease Research and Training Center (VBDRTC) is mandated to conduct research and provide training on major vector-borne diseases in Nepal, including malaria, kala-azar, dengue, chikungunya, lymphatic filariasis, scrub typhus, and Japanese encephalitis. Building on its legacy in malaria eradication, VBDRTC has progressively broadened its scope to address the wider burden of vector-borne diseases while also tackling emerging public health threats. Today, the Center plays a pivotal role in confronting challenges such as climate change and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), adopting a comprehensive One Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

To protect public health through the One Health approach by generating high-quality scientific evidence on the intersections of Climate Change, human-animal ecosystems, and pathogen dynamics, ensuring that national health policies are informed by rigorous research and advanced technology.

To be a premier Global Center of Excellence and a National Resource Center that leads cutting-edge research, professional capacity building, and innovative policy guidance for the prevention, control, and elimination of vector-borne and emerging infectious diseases in Nepal.

Goal

To revitalize VBDRTC as the primary technical hub for the Nepalese health sector, capable of addressing the dual threats of Vector-Borne Diseases (VBDs) and Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) while navigating the challenges of Insecticide Resistance and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
